DAN Ritual Drum (Four Masks)
A tall cylindrical wooden drum (1st half 20th C., 112 cm) from the Dan of the Ivory Coast, with four high-relief Dan masks carved around the body and a stretched leather skin — a rare anthropomorphic instrument.
1. The Voice of the Spirits (Gle)
For the Dan, the spirit force Gle cannot be seen in its true form; it can only manifest in the human world through a physical mask or through sound.
- An Animated Instrument: This is not a secular musical instrument. By carving four distinct Dan faces into the drum body, the sculptor literally gave the drum a spiritual identity. When struck, the drum does not merely make noise — it speaks with the voice of the ancestors.
2. Ritual Function and Directionality
- Four Faces: The four masks face the cardinal directions, symbolizing the drum's ability to broadcast the spirit's message across the entire community and into the forest.
- Ceremonial Hub: A drum of this size and elaboration would be the centerpiece of major rituals — circumcision camps, the settling of clan disputes, or the welcoming of important masked spirits into the village square.
Summary
This Dan drum is a highly rare, anthropomorphic instrument. Standing 112 cm tall, it seamlessly blends the Dan's famous mastery of face-mask carving with their deep belief in the spiritual power of music.
