SENUFO Power Figure (Kafigeledjo)

A deeply unsettling armless figure (attributed to the 1st half of the 20th C., 53 cm) from the Senufo of the Ivory Coast — entirely shrouded in coarse sackcloth heavily caked with mud, featuring protruding quills/feathers.

1. The aesthetics of terror and concealment

Unlike the smooth polished Senufo rhythm pounders (collection Nr. 67), the Kafigeledjo appears designed to provoke visceral fear.

• The Shroud: The wooden core is completely hidden beneath a shroud of coarse mud-caked fabric. In many West African ritual practices, concealment is understood to generate power, where the unseen is regarded as more threatening than the visible.

2. "He who speaks the truth"

• Secret Judicial Instrument: The name Kafigeledjo roughly translates to "he who speaks the truth." This object is traditionally associated with the secret judicial practices of the highest echelons of the Poro society.
• Night Trials: When a severe crime (murder, malevolent witchcraft) occurred and the culprit was unknown, this figure was brought out in the dead of night to identify the guilty party.

3. Lethal judicial magic

• An Active Executioner: The Kafigeledjo was not merely a symbol; it was believed to be an active executioner. The priests used it to divine the truth, uncover sorcerers, and cast lethal curses on enemies of the community.
• Toxic Proximity: Its power was considered so highly concentrated and toxic that touching it without proper ritual authorization was believed to cause instant death.
