BAGA Serpent Head Crest (Bansonyi) — Monumental

A staggering 2-meter wooden sculpture (1st half 20th C., 200 cm) from the Baga of Guinea, depicting the undulating S-curve body of a massive snake painted with geometric diamond patterns. Companion to the smaller Bansonyi at collection Nr. 47.

1. The rainbow python

The Bansonyi (or A-Mantsho-na-Tshol) is the physical manifestation of the great rainbow serpent, a supreme water spirit in Baga cosmology.

• Scale and Spectacle: At 200 cm, this crest was worn on the head, supported by a heavy conical framework hidden beneath raffia. The sweeping diamond patterns represent both the scales of the python and the colors of the rainbow — linking the swamps of Guinea to the heavens.

2. The dance of rivalry and protection

• Initiation: The serpent's primary role was to protect young boys during their circumcision rites, terrorizing any evil spirits that dared approach the sacred bush camp.
• Village Dueling: During public festivals, rival halves of the village would each bring out their Bansonyi. The two towering serpents would "duel" in the village square in a spectacular, competitive display of physical endurance and spiritual power.
