While Lobi bateba (shrine figures) are almost universally carved from wood, these miniature iterations executed in solid ivory are exceptionally rare and denote high prestige. The artist has carefully maintained the strict, frontal, and symmetrical geometry required of all bateba, ensuring that despite their small size and precious material, they still function visually as unyielding spiritual guardians. The ivory rendering elevates the otherwise utilitarian Lobi carving into the restricted prestige material register usually associated with royal courts.

Carved as a balanced male-female pair, these figures represent the necessary cosmological equilibrium for human survival and reproduction.
