SENUFO Female Altar Figure, Katyolo Ancient Mother (Ivory Coast, 1st half 20th cent., 56 cm)

Standing an impressive 56 cm, this wooden female figure is a masterpiece of Senufo cubism, featuring a highly elongated, prognathic face with a sweeping crest, sharply pointed, conical breasts, and aggressively angular, downward-pointing arms. The dense wood has a polished, dark brown patina.

1. Aesthetic style — Senufo cubism and the katyolo

This monumental figure represents the absolute pinnacle of Senufo geometric carving. The sculptor rejected all soft, naturalistic curves in favor of severe, aggressive angles. The face projects dramatically forward into a sharp, prognathic jaw, echoed by the dangerously sharp, conical breasts and the rigid, zigzagging arms carved free from the torso. This formidable, angular silhouette represents the Katyolo (the Ancient Mother), an idealized, powerful female ancestor who serves as the ultimate protector and spiritual head of the Senufo community.

2. Ritual function — the Poro and tyekpa societies

Figures of this scale and aggressive beauty were utilized by the most elite echelons of the Senufo secret societies. Among the central Senufo, they may have belonged to the Poro (men's society), used as pounding rhythm pounders (déblé) during agricultural and funerary rites to awaken the earth. Alternatively, they were utilized by the exclusive women's Tyekpa society, paraded publicly during the funerals of prominent female elders to assert the immense, underlying power of women in Senufo religious and political life.

3. Physical patina — deep handling patina and structural preservation

The authentic, early 20th-century origin of this piece is evident in its magnificent surface quality. Carved from extremely hard, dense indigenous wood, it has acquired a deep, glowing, dark-brown polish. The sharpest edges of the carving — the tips of the breasts, the pronounced chin, and the knees — have been softly rounded and darkened to a glass-like sheen by decades of rigorous ritual handling, dancing, and anointing. The base shows minor, natural desiccation, proving slow, environmental curing.
