A larger Bembe male power figure (1st half 20th C., 42 cm) from DR Congo — companion to 0372, with the same classic Bembe volumetric style: muscular standing male, slightly bent knees, large oversized head, broad simplified facial features, extremely complex geometric scarification patterns on the abdomen, and a small implement held in hand, the dark dense wood highly polished.

1. Anatomical Tension and the Bwende Aesthetic

The Bembe (and related Bwende) of the DRC / Congo Republic border are renowned for a carving style masterfully blending robust muscular realism with intense abstract decoration.

• Aggressive Volumes: Thick thighs, broad shoulders, and a large commanding head emphasize the seat of the spirit.
• Mabina Abdominal Canvas: The striking feature is the elaborate abdominal scarification (mabina) — carved in high relief with razor-sharp precision, the geometric patterns map initiation status, lineage, and social perfection onto the torso.

2. Nkisi and Ancestral Animation

These are highly active power figures (nkisi or nkite) — not portraits.
