DOGON Stool-Staff (Dolaba)
An intricate wooden hybrid ritual staff and portable stool (1st half 20th C., 69 cm) from the Dogon of Mali — a Dolaba, profound expression of Dogon mythology.
1. Mythological Lineage: The Nommo
Dogon cosmology centers on the Nommo, the primordial hermaphroditic ancestors created by the high god Amma.
- The Stacked Ancestors: The central column features a vertical stack of human figures representing the unbroken chain of human lineage. In Dogon thought, the living are physically and spiritually supported by the ancestors — just as the top of the staff is supported by the carved figures below.
- The Zigzag Motif: The serrated zigzag lines flanking the central column represent the descent of the Ark of the Nommo from heaven to earth, bringing water and order to the universe.
2. Functional Prestige: The Portable Throne
- Authority of the Elder: The Hogon (spiritual leader) or a respected elder would carry this staff during important travels or councils. The Y-shaped top allowed it to be used as a support while standing, or as a small ceremonial seat when resting.
- Seated in Wisdom: To be seated on an object carved with one's ancestors was a visual metaphor for authority — proving that the elder's decisions were grounded in the ancient laws of the founders.
3. Materiality and Patina
- Sahelian Weathering: The wood is dry, dense, and displays a crusty gray-brown patina typical of functional objects from the arid Sahelian climate of Mali — heavily conditioned by Harmattan winds.
- Generational Use: The polished contact zones (the fork-top grip, the seat) record generations of handling, confirming the object was an active accessory of office rather than a display piece.
Summary
The Dolaba is a portable piece of religious architecture. It compresses the vast complex mythology of the Dogon people into a functional staff, serving as a constant visual reminder of the cosmological order and the authority of the elders.
