SENUFO Horned Hybrid Mask (Kpelie Variant)
A dark densely carved Senufo mask (mid 20th C., 38 cm) from Ivory Coast — an elongated profile with narrow eyes, a protruding rectangular mouth, and prominent lateral geometric flanges. Distinguished by a massive sweeping superstructure of carved down-curving animal horns that merge with the central crest. The wood boasts a highly polished saturated dark-brown patina.
1. The Kpelie Variant and Horned Architecture
While sharing the delicate facial features and lateral "wing" flanges of the classic Kpelie, this mask introduces a much more aggressive masculine architecture to the upper half.
- Ram/Bush-Cow Horn Crest: The sweeping downward-curving horns merge seamlessly into the central sagittal crest.
- Hybrid Human-Wilderness Entity: Transforms the mask from a mere portrait of idealized feminine beauty into a hybrid entity — blending human grace with the formidable untamed power of the wilderness, a common thematic tension in Ivory Coast woodcarving.
2. The Poro Society and Supernatural Masquerade
Danced exclusively by initiated men of the Poro secret society during critical village transitions, primarily the elaborate multi-day funerals of senior society elders.
- Escorting Elder Souls: The mask's role is to escort the wandering soul of the deceased away from the human village and into the ancestral realm.
- Bush-Spirit Protection: The inclusion of heavy animal horns invokes the protective aggressive spirits of the bush — ensuring no malevolent witchcraft or rival spirits can interfere with the vulnerable soul of the deceased during the perilous metaphysical journey.
3. Mirror-Like Handling Polish
The patina defines the highest ethnographic standard.
- Lustrous Glass Patina: Incredibly deep saturated highly reflective glass patina over a dense mahogany core — not a modern varnish but the polymerized result of decades of continuous reverent handling.
