MOBA Ancestor Figure (Tchitcheri Sakwa)
A deeply eroded highly abstract wooden figure (19th C., 83 cm) from the Moba of Togo — fused indistinguishable facial features, columnar torso, separated legs, pale ancient patina.
1. The Ultimate Reduction: Tchitcheri Sakwa
The Moba of northern Togo create figures known as Tchitcheri.
- Faceless Power: The Moba believe that carving realistic facial features is dangerous, as it might attract malevolent spirits. The Tchitcheri is therefore carved as a blank rounded dome. The arms are often fused to the body or, as here, drop straight down like architectural supports.
- Clan Founders: Because this piece is relatively large (83 cm), it is a Tchitcheri Sakwa — a figure representing the founding ancestor of an entire clan, planted directly into the ground at a shrine.
2. 19th Century Weathering
The severe erosion of the wood — where the grain has worn away leaving only the hardest heartwood — verifies the 19th-century origin. It is a testament to decades of exposure to the Sahelian wind, rain, and ritual libations.
Summary
This Moba Tchitcheri is the epitome of African minimalist abstraction. It strips away all human detail to create a pure anonymous vessel for a founding ancestor — a deeply eroded pillar of faith that has survived from the 19th century.
