BAMANA Equestrian Figure
A monumental Bamana wooden equestrian (1st half 20th C., 108 cm) from Mali — a highly elongated rider wielding a weapon or implement, mounted on a stylized towering horse with detailed tack and bridle carving, the massive timber exhibiting a severely desiccated dry pale-brown surface with deep structural age cracks traversing the torso and the horse's flanks.
1. Mande Elongation and Heroic Authority
The carving style of the Bamana (Mande) frequently uses vertical elongation to project supreme political and spiritual authority.
- Architectural Elongation: Towering at over a meter tall, this equestrian is a masterwork of architectural elongation — the rider's elongated torso, crowned with a distinct crested helmet or coiffure, dwarfs the proportions of the horse, asserting human dominance over the natural world.
- Ironwork Echoes: The austere sharp angles of the rider's face echo the famous Bamana ironwork traditions — stripping away soft naturalism to project unyielding martial power.
2. Gwan Society and the Legendary Founders
Massive equestrian figures are deeply intertwined with the Gwan (or Jo) initiation societies.
- Mythic Founders: These figures depict legendary heroes, mythic founders of the Bamana empire, or deified warlords who brought iron, agriculture, and order to the community.
- Communal Pride Anchor: Displayed during major annual festivals, the figure served as a physical anchor for communal pride — reminding initiates of the martial legacy and aristocratic pedigree of the Mande cavalry that once dominated the Sahelian savannas.
3. Severe Desiccation and Savanna Weathering
The patina is a textbook example of early-20th-century outdoor / shrine weathering in the Sahel.
- Bleached Powdery Oxidation: Entirely devoid of commercial polish — a bleached powdery pale-brown oxidation caused by decades of harsh sun and wind exposure.
