BAMUN Prestige Trumpet
A long elaborately carved wooden trumpet (1st half 20th C., 120 cm) from the Bamun Kingdom of Cameroon — multiple registers of high-relief figures, geometric openwork (earth spiders), and a stylized head at the top.
1. Instruments of State
In the Bamun Kingdom, music was a monopoly of the King. This is a side-blown trumpet, likely played by royal retainers to announce the arrival of the Fon or to rally warriors.

2. Iconography of the Court
- The Earth Spider: The intricate openwork latticework carved into the shaft is a stylized representation of the earth spider. The spider is the most important divination animal in the Grassfields, representing supernatural wisdom.
- The Conquered: The stacked figures often represent the ancestors of the King or, conversely, captured enemies — physically subordinate to the sound of the royal horn.
