Terracotta pipes are very popular objects with which grassland chiefs can show off their "wealth". They are never used for smoking, but are kept in the respective treasure houses or audience chambers, thus fulfilling their purpose. The displays of the chiefs' showpieces go so far that, on the occasion of the NGOUN festival held every two years at the Sultan of Foumban, chiefs have objects from their treasure houses transported to the Sultan by their servants and set up there, in order to be able to show "who they are" to the outside world.
