TEKE Power Figure (Biteke with Feathers)
A highly charged Teke wooden figure (1st half 20th C., 23 cm) from Republic of Congo — a face with fine parallel vertical scarification marks, the torso completely engulfed in a massive barrel-shaped bundle of earth, resin, and cloth, surmounted by a large plume of inserted bird feathers protruding from the head and shoulders.
1. The Biteke and the Aesthetics of Accumulation
The Teke practice an aesthetic of accumulation — the carved wooden figure (tege) is merely an empty vessel until activated by a ritual specialist (Nganga).
- Mabina Scarifications: The carver's focus is restricted to the head — executing the classic Teke helmet-like coiffure and fine parallel facial scarifications (mabina).
- Spiritual Mass Over Anatomy: The body is intentionally minimized to serve as an armature for the massive abdominal pack of magical materials — visually prioritizing spiritual mass over anatomical realism.
2. Bilongo and Avian Antennae
The massive barrel surrounding the torso is the bilongo (magical medicine) — the true source of the object's power.
- Sacred Materials: Composed of sacred earth from ancestral graves, crushed shells, herbs, and animal matter bound together with resin and cloth — housing the specific spirit invoked by the Nganga.
- Feather Antennae: In Central African cosmology, feathers act as spiritual antennae — allowing the trapped spirit to "fly" into the invisible realm to hunt down witches, deliver curses, or gather information for divination.
3. Resinous Patina and Organic Integrity
The physical condition of this composite object is extraordinary.
- Surviving Feathers: Organic elements like feathers and raw earth are highly susceptible to insect damage and humidity — the fact that the massive bilongo pack remains tightly bound and intact confirms careful protection in a dry smoke-filled shrine environment.
