TEKE Power Figure (Bundle-Concealed)
A Teke Biteke (1st half 20th C., ~20 cm) from Republic of Congo — almost entirely concealed with only a small carved wooden head emerging from a massive tightly bound barrel-like bundle of dried banana leaves, fabric, and twine. Paired with 0428.
1. The Spectrum of Teke Magical Abstraction
This represents the absolute triumph of bilongo (magical matter) over the wood.
- Wood Swallowed by Bundle: The carved body is irrelevant and entirely swallowed by the massive meticulously tied bundle of leaves and fabric.
- Art in the Binding: The art lies not in the carving but in the elaborate secretive wrapping that binds the spirit — the carved head peeks out as the only visible remnant of the armature.
2. Fully-Charged Active Battery
This figure is a fully charged highly active Biteke.
- Concealed Potent Materials: The massive bundle of leaves and cloth conceals graveyard earth, animal claws, and herbs.
- Nganga Consultation: The Nganga (healer) consulted this bundle directly — speaking to the isolated wooden head to unlock the immense dangerous power trapped within the bindings.
3. Organic Desiccation and Ritual Saturation
The physical condition is an extraordinary survivor of organic preservation.
- Brittle Faded Fibers: Dried banana leaves and trade fabric are heavily desiccated, brittle, and faded — yet remain tightly bound.
- Century in Esoteric Sanctuary: This fragile organic integrity proves the object was kept undisturbed in a dry highly protected esoteric sanctuary for nearly a century.
Summary
Companion to 0428 and the bundle-concealed counterpart in a duality of Teke magical engineering, this figure captures the absolute triumph of additive magic over carved form. The fragile intact organic bundle and the tight bindings make it an exceptional ethnographic document of Congolese sorcery.
