DOGON Seated Ancestor Matriarch (Caryatid Stool)
An imposing Dogon seated female ancestor figure (1st half 20th C., 98 cm) from Mali — elongated seated form upon a stool supported by smaller caryatid figures, with a prominent sagittal crest, conical breasts, and strict geometric facial features. The dense wood is completely saturated with a dark oily heavily handled and polished patina.
1. Classical Cubism and Architectural Integration
This towering 98 cm sculpture is a flawless execution of classical Dogon cubism.
- Taut Geometric Solids: The artist has treated the female form as a series of intersecting geometric solids — cylindrical limbs, conical breasts, and a strict vertically aligned torso.
- Caryatid Stool as Foundation: By carving smaller supporting figures into the base, the artist visually elevates the central matriarch — symbolizing that her authority and wisdom rest upon the foundational support of the ancestors and the community itself.
2. The Nommo Matriarch and the Ya Shigine
In Dogon cosmology, monumental seated female figures of this caliber represent the primordial Nommo ancestors or a Ya Shigine.
- Initiated Female Elder: A Ya Shigine is a highly venerated initiated female elder who plays a vital role in the otherwise male-dominated Awa mask society — seated on a stool of prestige, she represents the pinnacle of matriarchal authority.
- Lineage Shrine Petitioning: Kept within a specialized lineage shrine or the courtyard of the Hogon, the statue was petitioned to ensure agricultural abundance and the unbroken continuation of the family line.
3. Saturation and Shrine Polish
Unlike Dogon figures stored in the arid wind-swept caves of the Bandiagara escarpment (which develop dry powdery surfaces), this sculpture possesses a breathtaking saturated "handling patina."
- The deep glossy blackened-brown surface is the direct result of decades of reverent continuous care within an active village shrine — the high points of the face, knees, and breasts have been polished to a glass-like finish by generations of human touch.
